“But the LORD said to Samuel, “Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him; for the LORD sees not as man sees; man looks on the outward appearance, but the LORD looks on the heart.”
1 Corinthians 3:16
“Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you?”
1 Corinthians 6:19,20
“Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, which you have from God? You are not your own; you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.”
Yesterday’s message was about how God made each of us unique, that we should embrace our individuality and not give in to how the world tells us we should look. God has also given us His Spirit to dwell within us. Today, I would like to look at how we are to treat these bodies He has blessed us with. As we see in the passage from 1 Samuel, God is not interested in the outward appearance as man sees but rather He looks at our hearts to see the type of person we are.
God has blessed us with His Spirit, which actually dwells within us. God even goes so far as to say the body He has given us is a temple or a shrine for His Spirit to dwell in. It makes me think of the Genesis account where God formed Adam from the dust and breathed into him the breath of life (Genesis 2:7). Without God’s spirit all we are is dust. Do we spend more time maintaining our dusty bodies than filling it with God’s Spirit? May we seek those things that are spiritual, not worldly.
The purpose of our life is to seek God and glorify Him in body and in spirit. May we honour the bodies and spirit that God has given us by seeking Him in all we think, say and do.
