“An Oracle. The word of the LORD concerning Israel: Thus says the LORD, who stretched out the heavens and founded the earth and formed the spirit of man within him: “Lo, I am about to make Jerusalem a cup of reeling to all the peoples round about; it will be against Judah also in the siege against Jerusalem. On that day I will make Jerusalem a heavy stone for all the peoples; all who lift it shall grievously hurt themselves. And all the nations of the earth will come together against it.”
“Remember this and consider, recall it to mind, you transgressors, remember the former things of old; for I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me, declaring the end from the beginning and from ancient times things not yet done, saying, ‘My counsel shall stand, and I will accomplish all my purpose,'”
“The sentence is by the decree of the watchers, the decision by the word of the holy ones, to the end that the living may know that the Most High rules the kingdom of men, and gives it to whom he will, and sets over it the lowliest of men.'”
Do you ever wonder why Israel is in the news so much? Why is this little country (400 miles long by 60 miles wide) so prominent in world issues? The bible has a lot to say about God’s people, the Jews, and the land that He promised to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. He also talks a lot about Jerusalem, where His capitol will be upon Christ’s return.
If you have been watching or reading the news in the past week you will have seen President Barak Obama host a summit with Israel and the PLO (Palestinian Liberation Organization). The main purpose for the meeting was to begin a process that would bring peace for Israel and acceptance for the Palestinians.
What struck me is the negotiations require Israel to give up Jerusalem, which they captured during the Arab-Israeli war of 1967. There is a lot of scripture about Jerusalem and how it is special to God. When we see these types of negotiations taking place we should be aware of the importance Jerusalem has in God’s plan. These days are foretold for a reason. We are to see them as sign posts along the way, that what God has foretold will actually happen and that Jerusalem is of great importance to God and His people.
May we be take courage in knowing that God is actively working in the kingdoms of men and that He has a plan and purpose for us.
